2K14: It’s Almost Here

In case you missed it, the makers of NBA 2k14 released a bunch of player ratings yesterday.  This basically means we are that much closer to putting off all of our schoolwork and running our friends in the new game. 2K14 is set to come out in about two weeks, so make sure you put that 60 dollars aside now.

As anticipated, some of the players were pretty underrated. It seems like they don’t give a lot of love to the big men, which breaks my heart because I’m such a low post force at the Rec. Come on, 2K sports!

Below are a few players who I thought weren’t rated properly. The rest of the ratings that were released are below.

The Underrated

Brook Lopez (81) The most consistent player on a solid Nets squad last season, also seemed to play unreal against the Bulls in the playoffs.

Marc Gasol (83) Won Defensive player of the year last season and is arguably one of the best centers in the game.

Roy Hibbert (81) Killed the Heat in the playoffs and the anchor for a defensive squad.

Harrison Barnes (76) Thought his coming out party in the playoffs would have bumped him up to the low 80s.

Steven Adams (58)  Kidding, just thought this rating was so low I had to mention it.

Hey guys, it’s Jake now. I’ll look at the overrated.

The Overrated

LeBron James (99) I know, I know, it’s LeBron. But the next highest rating on the list is Kevin Durant at 94! In real life or NBA 2K, I don’t think LeBron is that much better than KD. While he’s obviously the best in the league, LeBron should probably be closer to 97 if the other elites are in the low 90s.

Derrick Rose (92) I’m not making any friends today. All I’m sayin’ is that 92 is pretty damn high for a guy we haven’t seen play in over a year.

Rajon Rondo (90) This is even crazier. Rondo is not two points better than Steph Curry (88) or one point worse than Russell Westbrook (91). He’s a great passer, but struggles to score unless he has a lane to the basket. Curry and Westbrook are far more dominant 2K players. Oh, by the way, Rondo is rehabbing a torn ACL with no timetable for a return. WTF, 2K sports?

Kobe Bryant (93) Maybe I’m wrong and Kobe will have the greatest return from an Achilles tear ever, but it’s a big jump for 2K sports to assume that. A healthy Kobe is maybe a 93.

The Art of the Eurostep

The Art of the Eurostep

Good Morning All,

Apologies for my brief hiatus from DRaT, but I can assure you that things have been nothing short of crazy since I have returned to IU. I have lived a very not real life thus far, one that consists of drinking, dartying (Editor’s note: day partying, for those who don’t understand these whippersnappers), being out until 4 am, and some other various activities. As all my housemates’ say on Sunday nights, “its time to get our lives together.”

In this article, you will learn about my all-time favorite move in basketball: the Eurostep. Each time I see this move performed correctly, I actually freak out and lose it. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this “step,” it’s a very simple move that consists of picking up your dribbling while stepping in one direction, then quickly switching to your other foot to complete the layup. For a visual of this move, please see below.

Over the years, this specific move has become extremely popular. Coaches across the nation are running drills teaching their players how to execute this effective move. It is said that this move actually originated from the sport Handball. The step in both sports is extremely similar, so I definitely see a connection.

Whether I’m watching a NBA game or at the Rec playing pickup, it’s very rare that I don’t see this move performed. Heck, I’ve even added it to my array of moves around the basket. (It may look like I’m moving through water, but ask fellow co-writer and pickup teammate Bicky, the move works!)

Below are those who I think are the top euro steppers in the league today. Like I said before, the move is becoming increasingly popular, but these five guys have it down to a science. In my opinion (not in any order), the top five consists of Dwyane Wade, James Harden, Chris Paul, Manu Ginobili, and Rajon Rondo. Enjoy these next few videos of them along with few other players in the league.

Hope you enjoyed this piece, ladies and gentleman. If you’re a consistent pick up baller and need some new ways to score, I highly suggest you get this move down and add it to your game. It’s a very effective step even if you’re big and slow like myself. Be careful though, it is quite easy to become addicted to it. Those who fall in love with this move have been seen performing it drunkenly at their respective bars or even down the street on the way to class. I’m not the only culprit; it’s a fun move!

2013-14 League Pass Legends: New Orleans Pellies

The Pelicans, or as Zach Lowe says, the Pellies, had a pretty poor season last year, finishing second to last in a tough Western Conference. Unfortunately for the franchise, first overall pick Anthony Davis was sidelined throughout the season with various injuries and Austin Rivers may have had one of the worst statistical seasons of all time. And don’t forget Eric Gordon has barely played since he’s came to New Orleans. Whether he actually has a knee problem or he just really hates the franchise, they still have not been able to see the talented shooting guard at all. Remember, Gordon was pretty upset when they matched the Suns offer. Is his knee that bad? Who knows.

The Pelicans made a few puzzling moves this past offseason. They added the “quite talented yet can’t seem to put it all together” Tyreke Evans and also traded their rights to Nerlens Noel and a top five protected pick for young star guard Jrue Holliday. Assuming Gordon will be healthy, this gives the Pellies three players that like/need the ball in their hands at all times.

How is a team like this going to co exist? Can this very talented group of guards be able to play on the floor together? Although a three guard lineup may work out well in NBA 2k, lineups like that normally won’t fly in an ACTUAL NBA GAME. These are some issues that head coach Monty Williams is going to have trouble addressing.

Another thing I look forward to watching with this Pelicans squad is the emergence of Anthony Davis. Besides the injuries in his rookie season, Davis did have a pretty good year. When he was on the court, he averaged 13.5 PPG, 8.2 RPG, and 1.8 BPG, very respectable for a rookie. AD seems like a hard worker, so I will not be surprised if he takes another step this upcoming season. (He looked awesome in the Team USA Select Game.)

This Pelicans team will most likely not make the playoffs next year, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be an entertaining League Pass team.

Top 10 NBA Jerseys of the Past and Present

If money didn’t play a factor, I would 100% own every jersey out there. Whether it’s a throwback from the 90’s or one from today’s collection, I would buy them in a heartbeat.  Unfortunately, the budget is tight, and I can only surf the web wishing I could own some of them. Personally, there’s nothing better then throwing on a sick NBA jersey before heading to a party. You gotta love it when dudes across the street will yell “Yoooo sick jersey bro!” I myself am one of those dudes, letting people know if they’re rocking a nice throwback or some unique jersey. I just feel like its necessary to let someone know when their jersey is fresh. If it were socially acceptable, I’d be wearing one 24/7.

But enough about that. Below you will find 10 jerseys that I wish were hanging in my closet (in order). Obviously, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so please comment back with some of your favorites. It was VERY tough having to leave a few out, but this is what my list ended up being. Hope you agree with some.

First One Out: New York Knicks Christmas Jersey

Xmas Knicks

I really really really (really) dislike the Knicks, but these jerseys are fresh. I thought these were the coolest ones out of all the Christmas collection. If only my skin was darker… (it would look 20 times nicer LOL.) (Editor’s note: I also loved this one, but everyone else hated it! Let’s buy the lot of them and move to Estonia, Geo).

10) Chicago Bulls Black Pinstripe (Mid 90’s)

bulls pin stripes mid 1990's

It’s tough to compliment The Chode, but this is for sure one of his cooler jerseys. It’s disappointing that the Bulls don’t go back to this more often throughout the season. For sure a must have even–if you aren’t from Chicago.

9) Utah Jazz Purple (90’s)

jazz-jersey 90s

Purple has always been one of my favorite colors, and the mountains on this jersey just make it even cooler. Not a Jazz fan whatsoever, just a fan of the jersey itself. Is it time for a name change though?

8) Atlanta Hawks Red (80s)

1980's Hawks

One of the cooler jerseys of this 80’s era. Love the bright red and having it be a Spud Webb jersey is fresh!

7) Minnesota Timberwolves Black w/ Green Trim (00’s)

Timberwolves Black

My favorite part about this jersey was the green trim and how it made KG look like a maniac with his super dark skin.

6) Portland Trailblazers Rip City (Current)

Rip City 00's

Although I had no idea what “Rip City” meant, I still thought the jersey was cool as hell. Always rock this one when I’m Portland in 2K too.  In case you are wondering, the origin of this nickname came from their announcer in the early 70s. I have no idea how the nickname stuck but I want the jersey! (Editor’s note: Michael Beasley lives in “Rip City”).

5) Chicago Bulls Red Cursive (80’s)

Cursive Chicago Bulls 80s

This jersey right here is my favorite Bulls uni. Something about the cursive makes the jersey look so sick. Love that Bulls red.

4) All Star Jersey-The Pepper (1996)

96 All Star jersey

I don’t know why, but I just recently came across this All Star Jersey. Who wouldn’t want to rock a bright turquoise jersey with a pepper on the front kicking a basketball? Alright alright it may be a bit over the top, but its too unique not to have.

3) Miami Heat Back in Black (Current)

Heat All Black Current

Hate the Heat, love this jersey and always my go to when I’m them in 2K.

2 Denver Nuggets Blue w/ Rainbow Mountains (Early 90s)

nuggs 1980s-early 1990s

This specific jersey, I feel like, is tough to come by. If you see it, I suggest you scoop it up ASAP. Love the mountains the middle of the jersey, just don’t want an Alex English. Maybe customize a Kenneth Faried one? Would be sickkk.

1) Toronto Raptors Purple (Late 90s)

raptors 1990s

And here it is, my all time favorite jersey. Like I said before, purple is a great color and the red raptor on the front is so awesome. I would take this VC one or maybe even a T-Mac. NEED IT.

There you have it. My top ten jerseys that I want to have. Send us some of your favorites!

NBA 2K…It’s a Lifestyle

Every time a crazy trade or big free agent signing happens, I ask myself, “is this team going to be fun to play with in 2K?” Along with my obsession of the NBA as a whole, I am an NBA 2K fiend. There’s nothing better then playing with all your boys and getting into those crazy competitive match-ups. Ask the Chode, he won’t even talk to me throughout the game because he’s so focused (and I still beat him 70% of the time LOL). But that’s besides the point.

Below I will give a few teams that I think will be very fun to play with in next years video game, but not necessarily at the top of the NBA this season. Something to keep in mind: I purposely kept the Knicks, Clippers, Bulls, Thunder, and of course the Heat off this list. These teams are obviously the best in the game and easiest to play with.

*The lineups below may not be the starters in the actual NBA, just the lineups I would go with. Obviously, everyone has their own style of play and is entitled to their own opinion.

Detroit Pistons

Brandon Jennings

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

Josh Smith

Greg Monroe

Andre Drummond

Three lefty’s in a starting lineup is pretty crazy, but this new look Pistons squad should be a very good team in 2K14. It may lack in the shooting department, but how is an opponent supposed to get any type of rebound when you have these three bigs on the court. Not only that, but Detroit also has two of the premier shot blockers in today’s game with Drummond and Smith. If you’re able to get the shot down for KCP and the lefty slinger Brandon Jennings, this could be a great team to run with. It might be difficult to spread the floor with only two shooters, but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t dominate the paint.

New Orleans Pelicans (Pellies)

Jrue Holiday

Eric Gordon

Tyreke Evans

Ryan Anderson

Anthony Davis

This Pellies squad is an extremely interesting team. It’s not always the best move to go with a three guard line up, but how could you put one of those three on the bench to start the game. This isn’t real life hoops, it’s a video game! This type of team is one that I suggest you constantly run the floor with. With a quick center and three guards along with a spot up shooter, there’s really no reason to play any sort of half-court basketball. Get Eric Gordon’s shot down, and he instantly turns into one of the better scorers in this game. Size might end up being a factor in some of the games you play, but you should be able to counter that with the overall speed of this team.

Houston Rockets

Patrick Beverly

James Harden

Chandler Parsons

Omer Asik

Dwight Howard

Like many have been saying already, this team is very similar to the 2009 Orlando Magic. You have a premier center surrounded by shooters and an incredible back up center in Asik (in ’09 it was Marcin Gortat). As you can see above, I tweaked the starting line up a bit; personally, I have never been a big fan of Lin in 2K. He’s not a great shooter and he’s too small to drive with. Get Patrick Beverly’s shot down and he can drain. And someone please explain to me how your opponent will be able to get a clean look at the basket? Asik and Howard are basically the two best rim protectors in the game, making your opponent launch up threes and jump shots. You’ll also grab every single board! And we all know how great Harden is (euro steps on euro steps) This team has size and shooters, which should definitely equal wins.

Golden State Warriors

Steph Curry

Klay Thompson

Harrison Barnes

Andre Iguodala

Andrew Bogut

The Golden State Warriors were my team in NBA 2K13. I loved having the three guard offense, inserting Jack into the lineup, and then sliding Harrison Barnes over to the PF spot. But I must say, I don’t have an issue swapping Iggy for Jack. For some reason, Andre Iguodala is a stud in 2K. He’s so strong and can dunk the shit out of the ball; he’s incredible in transition and creates havoc on the defensive side of the ball. Oh, and don’t forget you have the best shooting back court in the game by far. Leave Curry or Thompson open for a second and they’ll drill the trey bomb. I like this team a lot, having two extremely good shooters, two very good big wing players who can run the floor and also a defensive anchor/rebounder in Bogut. If I get this team in my three randoms, I find it tough to pass them up.

Brooklyn Nets

Deron Williams

Joe Johnson

Paul Pierce

Kevin Garnett

Brook Lopez

Ahh, the Brooklyn Nets. So old, yet so good on paper. This translates into a great video game team. With this starting lineup, you might just have a top seven player at each position. And don’t forget their bench is very good, so when the old guys run out of gas at the end of the first quarter, you can put in some pretty solid players. With this squad, you have three very good three point shooters, a defensive anchor in Garnett, and two seven footers for rebounding and clogging the paint. Although Lopez can’t rebound for shit in real life, you shouldn’t have a big issue grabbing boards with him in a video game. This Brooklyn Nets team may not make it out of the second round in the playoffs, but they are sure as hell a good video game team.

And now a word from Jake Weiner…

If you’re a big NBA 2K junkie like Geo and me, you’ve probably heard that EA Sports’ NBA Live franchise is being rebooted, releasing a new game for the first time since NBA Elite 11, which was obviously horrible. Although I see no reason to switch from 2K and can’t imagine Live topping it, it’s worth looking into. Kyrie Irving will cover the game, and EA Sports released a trailer for it last week:

The graphics look pretty sweet, but all we’re seeing is Kyrie dribbling the ball and making weird facial expressions. Let’s be real. The Live franchise is dead. Its last two attempts didn’t even make the shelf and 2K gains more momentum every year. I’ll withhold final judgment until we see more of the game, but EA Sports should probably just give up and focus on Madden from now on. Although recent developments in the “College Football” franchise don’t bode well….

NBA 2K14, with LeBron James on the cover, comes out October 25th!
